Fatberg noun - a very large mass of solid waste that is found in a sewer, consisting especially of fat and items that people throw down toilets

The word " Fatberg" comes from " fat" and " Iceberg" and is used to describe enormous, putrid, solid masses that are made up of fats, oils and non- biodegradable items that have been incorrectly disposed down toilets and drains which aggregate with calcium from concreate pipes in sewers (saponification = turning into soap) consequently creating FATBERGS! They are dangerous to our sewer systems, waterways, wetlands, nature, wildlife, and our overall environment, including our health.

Here’s what you should do! Only flush the Three P's - Pee, Poo and (Toilet) Paper ONLY! Despite popular belief and clever marketing, flushable wipes are not in fact FLUSHABLE! They do not break down, just like facial tissues, paper towels, fats, oils, grease, coffee grounds, tea leaves and food scraps. It’s not easy or cheap to remove fatbergs, so think before you flush and pour anything from here on out!

NOTABLE FATBERGS FINDS

The most common items found are Condoms, Tampons, Dental Floss, Syringes, Ear Buds, Wet Wipes, Drugs, Bones, and even False Teeth. However, some of the most surprising finds would have to be a typewriter, bowling ball, mop heads and a toilet! However,

A Fatberg the size of a gas tanker truck was found in Melbourne in April 2020 and is thought to have grown so big due to a toilet paper shortage thanks to COVID-19 which spurred people to buy more wet wipes.

A fewer worker in Southwest England, found a 209 Foot (63.70 Meters) when he went through a manhole. He described it as being “really eerie” and YES, they smell!

Fatbergs can reach 800 Feet Long, stand 6 Feet Tall and weighed as much as four humpback whales.
