PROJECT OVERVIEW
Windsor is an inner northern suburb in the city of Brisbane, Queensland. Situated five minutes north of Brisbane's city centre it is steeped in history and home to an iconic fig free.
The Windsor Community Playground was part of a large Recreation Precint Plan, to support Brisbane City Council's commitment to creating more to see and do in Brisbane.
The aim of this project was to improve the active green space in the area by providing a community park and playground for the inner city precint, to create community connections catering to all ages and abilities and integrating with the natural environment around the iconic fig tree.
DESIGN AND ENGINEERING
A major design consideration for this project was the iconic and very large fig tree. It was important that all elements seamlessly tired into the current surroundings. Finished heights of the playground equipment could not conflict with existing branch heights.
The Rustic Tallaganda Hut was chosen for the key feature unit and provided the required bespoke design that maximised visual connection with the tree and allowed children to climb to canopy height. The spiral slide was selected to minimise the extent of surface attenuation and the use of rope and stainless steel provide a high level of transparency and lightness to all children to feel amongst the tree canopy.
To further enhance the space, other play elements include the Rustic Culgoa Net Climber, Rustic Single Hammock, Accessible Inclusive Orbit and Rustic 2-Bay swing strap seats, toddler seat and basket seat. All elements combined with a natural dry creek bed interlink together to provide movement, encourage balance, upper body strength, coordination, sensory and unstructured play. This providing an overall "natural play" experience that creates a community space to be enjoyed by all.
CONSTRUCTION
Working in conjunction with local urban landscaper, Naturform, this project was successfully constructed for Brisbane City Council. Construction and installation methodologies had to ensure no impact to the iconic fig tree crown branches, which included direct contact by plant and machinery. Instruction had to be made to all parties onsite to ensure this did not occur to sustain the tree's integrity. Changes and modification were made along the way.
This included the meticulous crane lift of the centre piece, the Tallaganda Hut, carefully transported and craned in to site from our local warehouse. Using our own local made Rustic range made this process quicker and easier. Being is sourced and made local gave us control over delivery, product knowlegde installation.
Flooding storage impacts had to also be considered on this site and the selected equipment needed the ability to withstand inundation.
All completed on time within budget for a successful community asset for Brisbane City Council fot many generations to come.
