Melbourne Museum case Study

BACKGROUND

Melbourne Museum is the largest museum in the Southern Hemisphere, regularly welcoming over 1 million visitors per year before Covid-19 restrictions. The museum needed to replace its existing cloaking and pigeonhole facility with a set of lockers which would better suit the needs of the museum and its patrons, as it prepared to welcome visitors back post-lockdown.

To do this, it engaged the services of Lockers Australasia, which has supplied lockers to the public and private sectors for over 20 years, and is a trusted partner of Stronghold.

THE PROJECT

To replace the existing facility and provide enough storage space for patrons, Melbourne Museum needed to add around 500 lockers to its cloakroom area. Lockers Australasia provided a design that got the required amount of lockers into the space without sacrificing on each patron’s individual storage allotment.

To withstand the usage habits of tourists, students and the many patrons passing through each day, the lockers had to be built strong, and the locking mechanism needed to be smart enough to bypass any mistakes or mischief caused by users.

Each locker has an individual electric lock on each door, locked and unlocked with a four-digit pin code unique to each user. A timing function unlocks the locker after a certain amount of time has passed - preventing lockers from becoming unusable throughout the day.

Mark Reinstein, Director at Lockers Australasia says the electronic locks allow Melbourne Museum to get greater use out of the locker inventory.

“No one stays in the museum for any longer than five or six hours. Because we’ve got the automatic timing function, the lockers automatically unlock overnight. So you’ve always got 500 lockers available each day.”

Stronghold Managing Director Adam Culpan worked with Mark on the design, engineering and manufacturing of the lockers to create the perfect storage solution for the space.

THE RESULT

Being Melbourne’s premier tourism facilities, Melbourne Museum didn’t just want the lockers to be functional - they had to look great as well. Stronghold produced the lockers in a slick ‘monument black’ gunmetal-like finish to match the aesthetics of the facility

The lockers were installed in Melbourne Museum during lockdown, and museum staff are looking forward to having them (and the museum) full once again.
