PG Colomadu was established in 1861 during the era of Sultan Mangkunegara IV. In 1998, PTPN-IX as the manager closed the mill and left the non-functioning building. The plant, which is more than 100 years old, is considered to have a vital function when it was still operating. Accounting for its history, it is not surprising that PG Colomadu becomes one of the most important cultural heritage buildings in Karanganyar, Central Java.

Located at the centre of Surabaya, Pb House by kantorgg is a renovation project of a 100-year-old mansion. The façade of Pb House has the characteristics of colonial architecture as the main feature and historical value of the building that need to be retained. However, considering the homeowner’s needs and lifestyle, the renovation of Pb House has resulted in a contemporary living space while still taking into account the original shape and style.

In the northeastern part of Kuala Lumpur, real estate development with semi-detached houses were the norm for some twenty years ago. Although houses were built with quite a spacious outdoor area for each lot, the division of the outdoor and indoor area were apparent. Eleena Jamil Architect had the chance to renovate one of these units and create better connection of the house interior with its surrounding.

Located on a well-known world heritage site in Penang, the Edison George Town takes its place in a former Hokkien tycoon’s Anglo-Chinese mansion built in the early 20th century. This upmarket 35-room boutique hotel combines the colonial past and oriental charm of Penang through a concept of timeless elegance that offers a blend of modern and traditional elements. It pays homage to the city’s monumental architectural features and creates a distinct design identity.

Located at the tip of the Java island, Banyuwangi recently has developed into a destination for local and international tourists. Set amid the mountains on the west side, and the sea on the east which directly borders Bali island, this regency relies on the natural beauty of Java island which is not yet popular to public. To date, the development of Banyuwangi is supported by a number of national architects who were involved in the construction of tourist facilities as well as a variety of well-organized city and public spaces. A well-designed environment can be experienced even at the moment tourists set their foot for the first time when using the airlines.

In order to fulfil the need for more learning space with an ever-growing number of students, Universitas Jenderal Ahmad Yani (UNJANI) completed a new building for the Faculty of Social and Political Science (FISIP). This new building was designed by XY Architects and consists of two building masses that are connected by an atrium covered with skylights at the top and curtain walls at the two ends.

When finished in 2018, Tanjong Pagar Centre was built to be one of the superlatives in Singapore. Standing at 290 meters above the street level, this mixed-used development is named as the tallest building in Singapore at the moment. With its position, flanked by the heritage rows of shophouses in Tanjong Pagar, this skyscraper stands as a prominent landmark on an urban scale. On a human scale, the extensive green open space of Tanjong Pagar Centre also marked itself as a landmark while being in the proximity of Tanjong Pagar MRT Station.

Sitting on a housing cluster in one corner of Greater Jakarta, Compartment House showcases a unique example of how a residence is transformed into a mixed-use space. Designed and owned by Studio Sae’s principal, the house has seen multiple development and renovation since 2013 before the latest major revamp happened in 2017. Since then, there are at least three main functions carried by this house—living, working and interacting, as three connected compartments.

Setelah 6 tahun AM Residence dibangun dan dihuni, rumah karya dan milik Andra Matin bila dibandingkan dengan rumah di daerah tropis pada umumnya masih terasa sangat berbeda. Hampir seluruh ruang yang ada di AM Residence dirancang terbuka, kecuali ruang tidur dan perpustakaan. Keterbukaan ruang utamanya dapat terlihat pada area komunal pada lantai dua yang menampung ruang makan, dapur, dan ruang tamu/berkumpul. Hanya dinaungi oleh massa bangunan di atasnya, ruang komunal ini berdiri tanpa dinding sehingga suasana ruang sangat ditentukan oleh cuaca setiap harinya.

Two years ago, when MRT Jakarta and many of the now-opened public spaces in the city had not yet existed, the idea of hanging out and strolling in some parks were deemed peculiar. With most of the public parks in Jakarta being gated, rarely maintained and poorly lit in the evening, parks were not the place of choice for people to spend their time. Parks, like those surrounding Monumen Nasional, were only popular on weekends or holidays, and people preferred to be in an air-conditioned mall, whiling their time away.

Area Senopati di Jakarta saat ini adalah lokasi berkumpulnya berbagai restoran, kafe, dan bar yang berlomba-lomba tampil menarik lewat fasad bangunannya. Menelusuri salah satu ruas jalan di area tersebut seakan berada dalam mall dengan berbagai etalase yang berusaha menjadi sorotan. Di tengah ramainya berbagai jenis fasad bangunan, Lei Lo Restaurant karya arti design menampilkan fasad sederhana yang didominasi elemen material semen bertekstur.

Kafe mau tidak mau sudah menjadi bagian dari gaya hidup hampir semua orang. Selain sebagai tempat berkumpul dan makan, kafe adalah tempat untuk menunjukkan eksistensi seseorang, memenuhi kebutuhan sosial media, atau sekadar tempat melepas penat dari rutinitas, atau setidaknya di Jakarta, dari panasnya kota. Tidak heran, desain kafe, khususnya di daerah kota, berputar pada kafe dengan ruang interior luas dan nyaman serta sedikit ruang luar yang umumnya untuk memenuhi kebutuhan mereka yang merokok.

Tidak banyak toko kopi didesain dengan pengalaman ruang yang kontemplatif. Kebanyakan coffeeshop biasanya dirancang untuk memiliki area duduk sebanyak mungkin, sehingga suasana yang tercipta adalah ramai, hidup, atau hangat. Kisaku karya Seniman Ruang sebaliknya mengkhususkan ruang “kosong” pada bagian area duduk, satu langsung terbuka ke ruang luar, satunya lagi taman kering yang dikelilingi area duduk menghadap ke luar taman kering tersebut.

Berlokasi di pusat Kota Surabaya, Pb House karya kantorgg adalah hasil renovasi rumah tinggal yang berumur setidaknya 100 tahun. Dari depan, fasad Pb House memiliki ciri khas arsitektur era kolonial yang menjadi daya tarik utama bangunan dan nilai sejarah yang patut dipertahankan. Namun, dengan kebutuhan dan gaya hidup pemilik rumah, renovasi Pb House menghasilkan ruang rumah yang kontemporer dengan tetap memperhatikan skala yang disesuaikan terhadap bentuk asli rumah ini.

Di Indonesia, sayembara yang juga disebut Roca Challenge diadakan 14 September 2019 lalu di Jakarta, yaitu di Roca Showroom. Untuk menyentuh aspek kebersihan dan kesehatan kamar mandi, Roca Challenge di Indonesia menantang 130 peserta untuk merancang atau merancang ulang sanitary ware baru yang mudah dibersihkan dan tidak mudah kotor. Bersamaan dengan itu, produk yang dirancang juga harus memiliki fitur dan fungsi baru, ergonomis, dan tentu mempertimbangkan keberlanjutan dan penghematan pemakaian air.
