One of the many tendencies when designing, especially to the majority of us new to home designing and decorating, is to meticulously match every furniture piece in a space, which might actually be doing you more harm than good. Some spaces need a pop of color, while others might need more than just a pop. Point is, be generous in giving your space character! Listen to your instincts and play around with different colors and textures that can refresh the look of any space.

One way you can easily spice things up is to introduce patterned and colorful fabrics, most especially in the pillows and throws that you use to accessorize. By doing this, you can decide to add touches of character to specific areas in a room that you think might be lacking, and at the same time ensure you aren’t overwhelming the space. When time comes and you’re ready for a new look, switching things around or even finding seasonal replacements won’t be an issue since accessories are the easiest to store!

Indoor plants are also a possible solution when looking to achieve a sense of comfort, balance, and of course, style. Aside from their proven health and emotional benefits, this little piece of nature in your home might be the perfect element that brings it all together.

The key really is to not overthink the design process and put too much focus on individual pieces. In the end it’s more about how everything comes together, which might take a little trial and error, but will be well worth it during Sunday lunch, when all your house guests can’t stop complimenting you on a job well done.
