How Can Louvres Save Lives?

Balancing design with fire safety is a valuable skill for architects and building designers to have, as regulations can impose on a desired plan. Preventative measures that stop fires from even starting is the best way to deal with this issue. One of the ways to reduce the danger of fire is with strategic use of louvres.

Making Use of Louvres for Fire Safety

Louvres are windows with a series of horizontal slats, angled so to repel rain and sunlight while still providing ventilation. Fixed or adjustable, these types of windows are common in most buildings for their ventilation and light weather resistant properties. This also makes them great tools for fire safety.

There are a couple of things to consider to get the most fire prevention out of louvres. First of all, it is important to consider the function of the louvre in different areas and at different stages of the fire. For example, when a fire starts it gives off a lot of smoke; this is when ventilation is important. Adjustable louvres can be automated electronically in sync with the fire alarm, so when a fire is detected louvres open automatically to provide ventilation, which is important during evacuation.

However, when it comes to inside a building, stopping a fire from spreading is more important than ventilation between rooms. Fixed louvres canā€™t be closed, presenting a fire safety issue. The solution to this is an intumescent strip applied to the louvre. In the event of intense and rising heat, the strip expands and fills any gaps in the louvre providing a barrier for up to 90 minutes.

Louvres are an ingenious way to ventilate a building while keeping out external elements like rain and sunlight, however they can perform life-saving fire safety functions. Ensure your building is well ventilated, and that fixed louvres within are for fire safe.
