In the April 2022 issue of Confort, "From the Manufacturing Site", the townhouse "Tsukizuku" in Teramachi, Kyoto, which we remodeled and designed, was introduced. It turned out that the site was related to Fujiwara no Michinaga, and the space was studded with designs with the theme of the full moon, named after the famous song of Mochizuki.
Confort No.184 April 2022 issue
The sliding doors in the room in front of the photo are the traditional pattern "Hosoro Susuki". The fusuma on the other side of the stairs, which can be seen by opening it, is a full moon made of paper with mica drawn on the ground with a "vortex on the wave front".
The staircase was likened to a bridge with a balustrade, and the handrail part that needed to be refurbished was carefully made by a carpenter with a turret as a motif. I feel like crossing the sea while watching the full moon.
I wanted to express how the full moon rises in the fusuma, so I received advice from Mr. Maruji, a long-established store in Kyoto who is still carefully hand-printing traditional Kyoto Kara paper.
When designing, I had a hard time finding a traditional Kyoto Kara paper that fits my image. It was really nice to meet Maruji in the end. I actually visited the atelier, visited the production site, and decided to ask.
The process of making Karagami by Maruji is also posted. Please take a look!
